Wiener Stadtwerke tram type Z no. 4208. Built 1939 for Third Avenue Transit System (New York City), 1948 this system was dismantled and replaced by subways and buses. 42 cars were sold to Wien, they were popular for their padded seats that could be oriented to the direction of travel, however they could not be used on all lines due to their greater width, they did not have magnetic rail brakes and could not pull trailers. Three old tram cars in the tramway museum Graz at the end station Mariatrost. Left is No. 637 of the Third Avenue Transit System (New York); this one was built 1939 and operated from 1949 to 1969 in Wien as Z 4202. In the middle you see the K 2406 from Wien, which operated until 1971. On the right, tram 2970 from München, built 1943 on the chassis of a destroyed tram type E from 1925, used until 1964 for passengers and until 1977 as a work car. 2002-06-03. Photo: tobias b köhler
