lgv3_1.jpg (107475 bytes)

The eastern end of the LGV 3 (new high-speed line between Aachen and Liège) south of Hergenrath, seen from the east side on 11 May 2008. The old line can be seen under the arch bridge on the left, the junction is located next to the Hammerbrücke visible in the background at the right edge of the Picture. The voltage changeover from 25 kV 50 Hz (new line) to 3 kV DC (old line) is between the arch bridge and the junction.

lgv3_2.jpg (109719 bytes)

The eastern end of the LGV 3 (new high-speed line between Aachen and Liège) south of Hergenrath, seen from the west side on 11 May 2008. The old line is on the left. The junction far in the background is hard to see, but the red handrails of the Hammerbrücke behind it can be spotted between the signals at the old line and the tree. On the other side of the tree, a part of the voltage changeover from 25 kV 50 Hz (new line) to 3 kV DC is visible.

moresnet1.jpg (105940 bytes)

The Moresnet bridge on the line from Aachen West to Montzen and Visé seen from the south side on 20 April 2003. Only the western half of the 1153 m long bridge, which consists of 22 segments, is visible. Currently the bridge is being renewed. On this weekend the third and the fourth segment (counting from the western end) were replaced, with the first two new segments being in place for five weeks then. The new segments are assembled at Montzen station and brought to the bridge by rail (using both tracks), together with the red gantries used to mount them. When the columns of the gantry are fixed at the pillars and the transporting train is removed, the old segment can be cut into three pieces, while it is supported by cables from the gantry. The old segment number four (right) was already lowered to the ground, and the new segment is in place, while at number three the old segment is still being cut. It seems that the gantries are brought back to Montzen by train again, after the rails on the new segments were mounted. The old segments are latter scrapped on the ground, at number two this is already in progress. This panoramic view was assembled from five pictures by software, sorry for the errors.

The old segments are latter scrapped on the ground, at number two this is already in progress. On the left a rail crane is visible on the bridge, obviously it will be needed for the track building later.

This detailed view of number three shows how the central part of the old segment is being winched down. The other pieces will follow later, after that the gantry is lowered to place the new segment on the pillars.

moresnet4.jpg (98454 bytes)

The Moresnet bridge on the line from Aachen West to Montzen and Visé seen from the south side on 21 June 2003. Currently the bridge is being renewed. A new segment is brought to the construction site. It is supported by bogies running on both tracks, two railway cranes running side by side are pushing. The columns of the red gantry will be lowered onto the pillars later to support the segment, then the train can be removed. After cutting the old segment and winching it down, the new one can be put into place. The part of the bridge the train is passing at the moment was already renewed.

moresnet5.jpg (98897 bytes)

Detailed view of the new bridge segment being brought to the construction site on 21 June 2003. On each track there are two eight-axled bogies and one four-axled bogie between them. Two-axled flatcars cover the distance between the bogies below the segment and the pushing cranes behind it. On the red gantry the four winches, which will support the central part of the old segment while cutting and then lower it, are visible.

moresnet6.jpg (99042 bytes)

The Moresnet bridge on the line from Aachen West to Montzen and Visé seen from the south side on 21 June 2003. The new segment has arrived at the position where it will be built in. It will replace the sixth old segment (counting from the western end). Later on that weekend also the new fifth segment will be brought to be inserted on the left. At the left edge there is the fourth segment which was replaced nine weeks before.
