BACK TO BACK: A pair of class-42 locomotives of BDZ at the station of Sindel - units 42 160 and 42 143. They arrived as double traction for a freight train coming from Kaspichan and at Sindel 42 143 was taken out of the train while 42 160 was coupled back to it in order to take the train to Razdelna or Povelyanovo. 19 August 2006

Locomotive 42 160 emerges from the ferry terminal of the port of Varna (Varna Feribotna) with a set of Russian freight cars. As well as the change of boggies to 1435-mm-gauge ones, these cars also require an additional car that is equipped with the standard coupling unit for Bulgaria on one side and the Russian equivalent on the other. This is the purpose of the first car behind the locomotive. 26 June 2007

Locomotive 42 171 at the mountain station of Duskotna with freight train 30651. This is a train that transports containers of the power station Maritsa Iztok 2 to Asparuhovo where they are loaded with fuel for the power station. 2 August 2006

WHEELS OF FURY: While I was waiting for a freight train to come out of Kaspichan, from the opposite side arrived locomotive 42 171.9 and rushed into the station in a great hurry. 9 December 2005

AT DAWN: Down from the mountain comes a train of empty tank cars hauled by two machines from the depot of Varna. Leading the way is locomotive 42 179 and behind it is locomotive 42 081 - the last in the class 42 which is still wearing its original laminated body. Karnobat, 7 August 2006

Class-42 locomotives of BDZ have had a very dramatic fate. Delivered in the late 1960s, originally they had state-of-the-art laminated bodies with distinctive large windscreens. As time went on, the machines changed their elegant looks with hastily crafted bodies reminiscent of those on class-43 locomotives. Through the 1980s and the 1990s most of the 42s were gradually scrapped and the original fleet of 90 units was reduced to just 7 by 2005. Only one of them is still in its original outfit - the rest have been re-numbered to class 42 1xx. All of the units still in regular service are based at the depot of Varna and service a variety of freight trains. On this particular photo locomotive 42 179.2 is passing through the station Sindel Razpredelitelna with a freight train from Varna to Kaspichan. Apparently 42s have a very loud low-pitched horn tone - I could hear this one coming from as far away as Razdelna. Bliss! 9 December 2005

BDZ electric locomotive 42171 and shunter 55155 at freight yard of Shumen station during shunting a freight train. The train arrived at Shumen station with Skoda loco + shunter + freight carriages, then the Skoda was removed and the Faur shunter 55155 made the shunts. After that they got together back on the train and left the station towards Varna.
