Pleven_roundhouse_1__Pleven_locomotive_depot__2_October_2016.jpg (125681 bytes)

Steam_in_Bulgaria Pleven roundhouse_1. As far as is known, only two roundhouses are still standing in Bulgaria (the other is at Varna); even then, the depot building at Pleven is not now used for housing locomotives. 2 October 2016 Roger Griffiths. roger.griffiths@hotmail.com

Steam_in_Bulgaria Pleven roundhouse_2. Pleven depot turntable – speed limit 2 kph! The two diesel locomotives in the distance had been withdrawn for scrapping. 2 October 2016 Roger Griffiths. roger.griffiths@hotmail.com

Steam_in_Bulgaria Pleven roundhouse_3. Pleven depot; derelict rolling stock stored on the open stabling roads. 2 October 2016 Roger Griffiths. roger.griffiths@hotmail.com

Pleven_roundhouse_4__the_depot_interior__2_October_2016.jpg (134539 bytes)

Steam_in_Bulgaria Pleven roundhouse_4. The interior of the depot housed only these two scrap bogies, sitting over the former wheel-drop pit. From the concrete pillars and upper supporting beam, it is evident that the building had to be reinforced at some time. 2 October 2016 Roger Griffiths. roger.griffiths@hotmail.com

Pleven_roundhouse_5__the_depot_roof__2_October_2016.jpg (130512 bytes)

Steam_in_Bulgaria Pleven roundhouse_5. From the condition of the roof timbers and many gaps in the tiling, Pleven engine shed is living on borrowed time. But before it can be demolished, look at the ceiling lining panels: asbestos! Much expensive, specialist clearance work will be required to safely remove the carcinogenic material, even if the building is left to fall down of its own accord! 2 October 2016 Roger Griffiths. roger.griffiths@hotmail.com
