Appenzell train station

Appenzell station, as a part of the Appenzellbahnen. Appenzell is the cantonal capital of the half-canton Appenzell-Inner-Rhoden (further south down the line is Herisau, the cantonal capital of the half-canton Appenzell-Ausser-Rhoden, and takes 30 to 45 minutes with the Appenzellbahnen).

Trains travelling between Sankt Gallen and Gossau (also canton of Sankt Gallen) via Herisau are narrow-gauge (1,000 mm) as opposed to the standard gauge (1,435 mm). On the meter gauge line, special trains are required. The narrow-gauge line between Sankt Gallen and Gossau via Herisau have many bends, a trip from Gossau to Herisau, Herisau to Appenzell, and Appenzell to Sankt Gallen may take about two hours, not counting stop-overs. It is worth the trip, no matter what time of year.

Taken Saturday 29 December 2001.
