423 664-2, a Munich S-Bahn (suburban railway) EMU, was in service on the NRW (North Rhine-Westphalia, a state in the west of Germany, far away from Bavaria) S 12 on 20 January 2007, seen at Düren after arrival as S 8341. As the passenger information system is not programmed for these duties, the line number is indicated by a sheet of paper at the windscreen and the annoncement of the stops inside the train is done "manually" (by the driver using the microphone). Note that the EMUs from Munich do not have a first class compartment next to the cab, unlike the EMUs normally running in NRW. The second unit was a normal NRW unit, with first class compartments.

423 693-1 at the end of a special train seen in Düren (on Cologne-Aachen) on 12 December 2002. It was one of the test runs for the new S-Bahn (urban trains) line 13 Cologne-Düren which starts on 15 December 2002. This was the leading unit when the train came from Cologne.

On the left is 111 148-3 at the rear end of RE 12720 to Rheine, waiting for departure in Düren (on Cologne-Aachen) on 23 February 2003. As there were construction works going on west of Düren, the RE 7 line did not serve the section Düren-Aachen that day (only the RE 1 line did), the trains ended here in track 4 to return to Rheine. On the right is 423 051-2 at the rear end of an S 13 service to Cologne. Originally the class 111 locos with this livery were ordered to move S-Bahn trains in the Rhine-Ruhr area. Now the S-Bahn is operated with class 423 EMU's and trains moved by class 143 locos, and the S-Bahn livery was replaced by the traffic red livery used for all local and regional trains. Class 111 locos are used for regional express trains, mostly with double deck cars.
