01508_ICE3M_Drivers_cab.jpg (122595 bytes)

Photographed from inside the drivers cab of a DB ICE 3M. (1st Class lounge end).

IF YOU DON'T ASK - YOU DON'T GET!

This was the ICE 824 service from Frankfurt am Main to Brussels Midi Zuid via Köln and Liege-Guillemins
on a non HS dedicated section of track somewhere near Aachen while travelling at 84mph (135 km/h).
Section speed set at a maximum of 87mph (140km/h).

The ICE 3M (multi system) was developed to operate outside Germany. It is licensed for operation
in Switzerland, the Netherlands and Belgium. In Belgium, the train is limited to 155 mph (250km/h)
instead of 186 mph (300km/h) due to problems with flying gravel and its frictionless electromagnetic brake.
The ICE's braking system was met with considerable scepticism by the French during licensing trials for
operation in France.

Photographed 10th February 2007.

ICE 824 service from Frankfurt am Main to Brussels Midi Zuid via Köln and Liege-Guillemins

At both ends of ICE3M trains there is a very comfortable lounge compartment with a view of the track,
through floor to ceiling glass window that separates the driver's cabin from the compartment. The driver can,
however, "frost" the glass at the press of a button. It also “frosts” during overhead power sections or voltage
changes.

DB-Alleo_ICE-Paris_Dinner_1.jpg (115189 bytes)

Dinner offered in 1st-class (international passengers only) on ICE 9559 (Paris Est ---> Frankfurt Hbf):

• Orange juice
• Apple and Goose liver cocktail
• Parma ham with spicy chinese noddles, rocket salad and cherry tomato (+sweet dressing)
• Fruit sponge cake with custard
• White bread
• Butter
• Red Wine (Merlot 2005), which I had to choose out of Riesling, Water and Coffee.

Those passengers travelling in French internal traffic (viz. Paris-Forbach) were conversely not entitled to these frills, as on any other internal journey in France.

All in all, a commendable effort to offer a top-tier mainline service, as on Eurostar, Thalys, Virgin Trains, or RENFE-LD flagship services.
Sadly, this offer is really too restricted (small servings, no extra bread, water rationed and exclusive of most other drinks, no tea available), and does not really mirror the quality rolling-stock...

No newspaper whatsoever was on offer on that evening.

1st July 2007.

Lunch offered in 1st-class on ICE 9551 (Saarbrücken Hbf ---> Paris Est):

• Orange juice
• Spinash and flying-fish caviar cocktail
• Roast beef with carrots and rocket salad (+sweet dressing)
• Brie cheese (made in Germany)
• Apple turnover
• White bread
• Butter
• Water.

Newspaper Die Welt was also offered shortly before arriving in Paris.

Information screen in the vestibule of Coach 27 of ICE 9559 (Paris Est ---> Frankfurt Hbf)

The speed meter recorded 318 km/h shortly after running through the Parkway station of Champagne-Ardennes TGV (for Rheims), a figure which it would never exceed otherwise on the whole of the HSL Vaires sur Marne-Herny...

Paris-Est.

The ICE 3 has real compartments in first class (again), but now the walls are actually wood-plated, other than in the ICE 1, where passengers complained about too much plastic. The person in the seat is me.
