The station of Düren at the end of the upgraded line from Cologne (ABS 4) seen looking towards north on 6 November 2001. In the foreground is track 3 for the trains towards Cologne. Behind it is the area where track 2, the straight track towards Cologne, was removed. Track 1 is still in it's old place in this area. The gap between the next two platforms used to contain the tracks 17, 18 and 19 which ended at a turntable east of the station building. Behind are the tracks 22 and 23 for the trains to Jülich and some tracks for freight trains.

dueren17.jpg (134059 bytes)

The station of Düren at the end of the upgraded line from Cologne (ABS 4) seen looking towards west along track 3 on 27 April 2002. Behind the switch, track 2 is removed to be built up new. The part of track 2 inside the station visible on the right is connected to track 1 in the background and used for trains towards Aachen, note the green exit signal at the right edge. In the new part of track 2 there will be connections to track 1 and to the tracks on the south side (left). Between track 2 and the house is the single tracked line to Heimbach, a Regiosprinter of the Dürener Kreisbahn (DKB) is approaching from there.

The station of Düren at the end of the upgraded line from Cologne (ABS 4) seen looking towards west along track 3 on 29 April 2002. Behind the switch, track 2 was built up new. It seems that the connection to the tracks on the south side (left) was not finally aligned yet. The part of track 2 inside the station visible on the right is connected to track 1 in the background and used for trains towards Aachen, note the exit signal at the right edge.

dueren20.jpg (115167 bytes)

The station of Düren at the end of the upgraded line from Cologne (ABS 4) seen looking towards west from RB 11535 just departing from track 3 (left). In the center is the new track 2, which is connected to track 1 at the ends of the station. A temporary platform is under construction. I guess it will be used only for a short time, later it will be removed to allow the reconstruction of track 1. On the left is a Lf3 board (with the "E") marking the end of a temporary speed limit.

dueren22.jpg (117161 bytes)

The station of Düren at the end of the upgraded line from Cologne (ABS 4) seen looking towards east along track 22 (left) on 22 May 2002. Because of the construction works, the access for wheelchairs at the western end of the platform between track 3 and 5 is currently unusable. This way leads to a new access at the eastern end of the platform.

dueren23.jpg (135990 bytes)

The station of Düren at the end of the upgraded line from Cologne (ABS 4) seen looking towards south from the platform of track 1 on 22 May 2002. The platform between track 3 and 5 has been removed west of the staircase (left). I guess that an elevator will be constructed in this area, connecting the platform with the pedestrian tunnel. In the background is a new platform with a staircase on the left and an elevator on the right.

dueren3.jpg (114973 bytes)

The station of Düren at the end of the upgraded line from Cologne (ABS 4) seen on 5 August 2001. At this new platform the S-Bahn (urban trains) to Cologne/Bonn and the Euregiobahn to Aachen/Mönchengladbach will meet, making the neccessary changing for throughgoing passengers as easy as possible. Note the step in the lower part, the left track will be placed higher than the right because the class 423 EMUs of the S-Bahn (right track) require 96 cm platform height above the rails while the Talent DMUs of the Euregiobahn (left track) require 76 cm for a stepless entrance.

The station of Düren at the end of the upgraded line from Cologne (ABS 4) seen from the platform between the tracks 3 and 5 on 28 June 2002. At the new platform at track 6 the building for the elevator was errected. Unfortunately it is not made of a transparent material, what would have looked much better in my opinion.

dueren40.jpg (102172 bytes)

The station of Düren at the end of the upgraded line from Cologne (ABS 4) seen looking towards east along the new platform of track 1 on 13 August 2002. Note that the area where one should not be when a train is passing is marked with a narrow white line just right of the columns. The wider white line normally used for this purpose is further left. With it's special surface it is also intended to guide blind people along the platform, so it makes no sense to let is pass the columns too nearly.

dueren41.jpg (113617 bytes)

The station of Düren at the end of the upgraded line from Cologne (ABS 4) seen looking towards east along the new platform of track 1 on 13 August 2002. In this area east of the platform roof the wide white line is nearer at the edge. Note that the distance is still bigger than on most of the platforms. The reason is that the trains will pass here with 200 km/h when the line is fully upgraded.

dueren42.jpg (148058 bytes)

The station of Düren at the end of the upgraded line from Cologne (ABS 4) seen looking towards west from the platform of track 6 on 15 August 2002. At the old staircase between track 3 and 5 the roof and the walls were removed. In the future the whole western part of the platform will be covered by a roof. Behind the staircase a new elevator is prepared. At track 5, the platform will be continued by a lower part for the trains to Heimbach, note that the signals (the old one and a new one that will replace it) are very far away.

dueren45.jpg (130347 bytes)

The station of Düren at the end of the upgraded line from Cologne (ABS 4) seen looking towards west along the platform of track 6 on 13 September 2002. The roof seems to be finished. Track 6 is on the right, the track on the left does not have a number yet as the old signalbox does not "know" it. It will be called track 6 when the new signalbox goes into service, some track numbers will be shifted then.

dueren47.jpg (113537 bytes)

The station of Düren at the end of the upgraded line from Cologne (ABS 4) seen from the south side on 19 December 2002. The rebuilt platform between track 3 and 4 (left) and the new platform between track 5 and 6 (right) are visible. On the left in the background is the station building with the platform of track 1 (not visible) next to it. The platform of track 4 (formerly known as track 5) has a low section at this end for the RegioSprinters of the Dürener Kreisbahn (DKB). Track 5 (track 6 in the past) is used for the S-Bahn (urban trains) towards Cologne, a train is waiting there. Next to track 6 is track 7 without a platform. The building at the right edge of the picture is the new electronic signalbox (elektronisches Stellwerk, ESTW). When it was taken into service (on 24 November 2002), some of the track numbers were changed.

dueren48.jpg (121645 bytes)

The station of Düren at the end of the upgraded line from Cologne (ABS 4) seen from the eastern end on 4 July 2005. Next to the station building (built 1874) is track 1 for trains towards Aachen, those trains that pass through towards Cologne without stopping use track 2. Track 3 on the right side of the platform is for regional trains towards Cologne. Most of track 4 on the left is normally unused, on the western end is a short section where the platform is lower. This section is used for trains towards Heimbach, a RegioSprinter is visible in the background. Track 5 at the next platform is used for the S-Bahn (urban trains) towards Cologne. A few trains which circulate between Düren and Aachen in the evening use track 6, behind it is track 7 used for freight trains. The tracks 22 and 23 for the trains towards Linnich are on the other side of the station building.

dueren49.jpg (117562 bytes)

The station of Düren at the end of the upgraded line from Cologne (ABS 4) seen from the platform between track 5 and 6 on 5 May 2006. In the foreground tracks 6 (at the platform) and 7 (without a platform) are visible. Behind them four dead-end tracks are under construction, they seem to be intended for the storage of trains. Obviously three of the tracks will be electrified, so they can be used to store S-Bahn (suburban railway) EMUs. The visible buffers belong to the second and the third track, those of the first and the fourth (which is much shorter) are hidden behind the small building. Note the two interesting span poles near the buffers. The supports between the second and the third track seem to be intended for a narrow platform, which will propably be used for the interior cleaning of the stored trains.

dueren8.jpg (133491 bytes)

The station of Düren at the end of the upgraded line from Cologne (ABS 4) seen on 6 November 2001. This is the southern part of the eastern end. In the foreground is track 5, which will be renumbered to track 4 in the future, it will be used for the trains to Münster as far as i know by now. On the right follows track 6, which will be used for the S-Bahn (urban trains). The next track is the new track 7 for freight trains.

dueren9.jpg (115736 bytes)

The station of Düren at the end of the upgraded line from Cologne (ABS 4) seen on 6 November 2001. This is the northern part of the eastern end. The track on the right is track 3. It used to be a siding track next to the platform, connected to track 2, the straight track leading towards Cologne. Now track 2 is removed, it's signal is marked as invalid by a white cross. Track 1 next to it, which was the straight track for the other direction, was shifted and is visible at the left edge. A temporary level crossing was installed for the construction works in the area between the tracks. All trains to Cologne use track 3 and continue over the new track for the S-Bahn (urban trains) in the background. Near the signal is an Lf1 (the triangle with the 8) that announces (or, in this case, repeats) a temporary speed restriction to 80 km/h. The Lf2 (with the A) marks the beginning of the restriction.
