DVB "CarGoTram" No. 2001+2021+2022+2023+2002 in the depot
Dresden-Trachenberge on 16 November 2000 - one day after being
delivered from its builder, Schalker Eisenhütte. This 5-car freight train
for Dresden's tram system will transport goods from the freight terminal
Dresden-Friedrichstadt to the Volkswagen car factory at Straßburger Platz.

DVB "CarGoTram" No. 2001+2021+2022+2023+2002 in the depot
Dresden-Trachenberge on 16 November 2000. On this side you can see how the
protective panel can swing up to reveal a coupler (only needed to move a
train when out of order).

DVB "CarGoTram", Dresden-Trachenberge, 2000-11-16. Side view of the end
car No. 2001. The bogies have been rebuilt from old CKD Tatra cars with
new motors, and are mostly covered with skirts. The tarpaulin can be
rolled up for easy loading/unloading.

DVB "CarGoTram" 2001+2021+2022+2023+2002, Dresden-Trachenberge,
2000-11-16. It was delivered the evening before, and is soon going to be
tested in the tram network of Dresden. Due to the unusual track gauge, it
couldn't be tested anywhere else.

2000-11-16. The 5-car train is about 60 m long (as much as four T4D cars
or two NGT6). Each car is shorter than a T4D, probably for reasons of axle
loading.

entirely. A gangway between the cars does not exist (no need to move

The DVB CarGoTram was presented to the public on 2001-01-13 at the stop
of the sightseeing trams (Stadtrundfahrt) on the Postplatz station in
front of the Schauspielhaus, one of Dresden's theatres. A lot of people
were interested in visiting the cab.

After the presentation, the DVB CarGoTram (on the way back to its
depot) went via Albertplatz, where we see it taking a left turn towards

The CargoTram concept of moving freight by tram is not an entirely new idea, but this modern incarnation is certainly breaking new ground for the modernity and frequency. Running through the city in Dresden between Volkswagen plants this system is clearly advertised and promoted, on the notice boards it is announced as VWBahn and timings are given, they are normally announced up to twenty minutes prior to arrival. They run in Dresden.
