During the celebration of 125 years Kölner Verkehrsbetriebe (KVB) at
Neumarkt on 25 May 2002, thermite welding of rails was demonstrated. Most of
the steel outside the rail profile was removed. Some grinding would be needed
to remove the rest, but this was not done during the demonstration as some
sparks might have done harm to the spectators.
