Madrid-Lerida HSL, in Lerida, alongside the conventional line.
While the latter is double-tracked, the former is single-tracked. This is because once the HSL reaches its next stage, a by-pass will see light south of this city and will accommodate nonstop services. Only those high-speed services calling at Lérida/Lleida will still use this single-track. This pic is taken from the bridge on the Segre, and one can spot the very particular canopy of the station of Lérida-Pirineos/Lleida-Pírineus in the background. Lérida/Lleida. 11th May 2003. Trenhotel 927 "Rosalía de Castro" (Barcelona-A Coruña/Vigo), seen passing Redondela de Galicia at full speed shortly before 10am, approaching Vigo.
This service ran from 1996 to 1998 on a 3-weekly basis at peak times (Summer holiday, Xmas and Easter), in addition to the usual Estrella "Galicia", cutting overnight journey times by 2 hrs or so. Shortage of Talgo rolling-stock and more pressing priorities (Eg the conversion of the Madrid-Galicia Estrella into a Trenhotel in early-1999) have led to the termination of this service. Yet, it is broadly admitted that a Trenhotel is to run again on Barcelona-Galicia (as a replacement for the antiquated Estrella), once RENFE soon gets extra Talgo sleeper sets, using part of the Madrid-Barcelona HSL.
