First Spanish TGV’s accident

Date: 30-03-2000, 20:30 approximately

A mortal colision has shacked Torredembarra (Tarragona- Spain), in the line that joins Barcelona with Tarragona and Valencia, called Mediterranean Line.

In the accident there are two trains involved:
-“Euromed” (the spanish version of TGV with, for 220 km/h) 100.101; built in 1997. This train belongs to “Grandes Líneas- Renfe” (big routes- Spanish Railways) and is paint white with a blue strip.
-Double train 448 built in the 80’s and reformed in 2002. These trains belongs to “Regionales- Renfe” (regional routes- Spanish Railways) and are paint white and orange.

Description of the event:
In Torredembarra’s station 448 left the track number 4 (for trains that stops at there station) in order to incorporate to track number 2 (for direct trains, of general line). While the regional train was over the point; Euromed from track 2 charged it by left side.
Generally, the regional has to give way to Euromed, that doesn’t stop at Torredembarra station. After the shock, the first coach of 448 (in doble unit of three coaches) fell over, first motor of Euromed tumbled down, and the first coach of Euromed placed on it. As a result of the accident two persons died and 91 were injured.
