Dual-gauge experimental track (Iberic: 1668mm-5ft6in; Standard: 1435mm-4ft8in) seen at Olmedo, on the Madrid-Valladolid/Medina del Campo forthcoming HSL.
This track actually uses the trackbed for the Olmedo-Medina del Campo branch, which itself re-uses the former Segovia-Medina line, closed down in 1988. This gauge-changer was built in 2002 in an attempt to accommodate for both track-gauges at high speeds. This track has been cleared for 250kph, after extensive trials with the Talgo XXI Prototype. 2002. While trackbed has already got some ballast and all catenary masts, tracklaying and wiring are halted until consolidation works in the tunnels of La Plana-Picamoixons are over, hopefully by the end of 2004. At this place, the HSL leaves the Plateau of Aragon (which extends until Western Catalonia), and begins to go down towards the Coast. This pic is looking towards the Coast. Portbou-Barcelona conventional line, seen from the rear car of Arco 1101/0 (Portbou-->Valencia Nord).
At this stage, the train was running on Riudellots-Sils, one of the straightest segment of that route. This is also 1 of the 2 portions anywhere North of Barcelona where top speed rises to 160km/h. Caldes de Malavella. 25th July 2005.
