Couchette car type AcBc convertible with new logo Corail in the Irun-Paris

SNCF_Ac4Bc5_1.jpg (48314 bytes)

1st/2nd-class (larger-carbody) DEV (U-58) Couchettes-car (Ac4Bc5; 50 87 44 37-040-6), seen completing its carreer on Omnibus 8708 (presumably Metz-Thionville).

This car is part of the only batch of DEV cars with 1st-class couchettes, and was delivered in the late-50s.

While it had originally been mounted on Y16-I bogies, it got new Y24-Z bogies in the early-60s.
The "TEN" livery dates back to the late-70s.

SNCF_Ac4Bc5x_1.jpg (46354 bytes)

1st/2nd-class Couchettes UIC-Y car (Ac4Bc5x) of SNCF-GL, seen idle in Metz.

This car belongs to the first orders for UIC couchettes cars (1963-1969), with fewer comfortable accommodation than subsequent orders (1970-1973).

Metz-ville. 16th June 2004.

SNCF_Corail_AcBcux_1.jpg (60508 bytes)

1st/2nd-class Couchettes Corail car (AcBcux) of SNCF-GL, seen in the consist of Corail Service Nuit 4238 "Lorazur" (Luxemburg-Nice).

This car belongs to the very last order for Corail cars (VU-84).

Rather than offer some compartments in 1st-class on the one hand and some in 2nd-class on the other hand (as in UIC-Y Ac4Bc5x cars), this car actually has a unified layout of 10 compartments, as 2nd-class couchettes Bc10ux cars.

All compartments can be arranged with 6 or 4 couchettes (viz. in 2nd- or 1st-class accommodation), depending on demand, which ensures an appreciable operational flexibility.

Yet, following repeated complaints from 1st-class custom against the lower quality offered than on Ac9ux cars, these AcBcux are mostly marketed as 2nd-class only accommodation.

1st/2nd-class Couchettes Corail car (AcBcux) of SNCF-GL, seen in the consist of Corail Service Nuit 4238 "Lorazur" (Luxemburg-Nice).

As this car can offer 1st- and 2nd-class accommodation in flexible patterns, there is no outer indication as to class. Instead, advertised accommodation is confined to "Couchettes".

1st/2nd-class "convertible" AcBcux couchettes Corail car (VU-84) of SNCF-GL, seen in the consist of Corail Lunéa 3730 "Paris-Côte Vermeille" (Cerbère-Paris Austerlitz).

On this service, these cars are marketed as 2nd-class accommodation only.

One can see the newly-applied "Corail" logo.

On this service, the whole of this car (viz. 10 compartments) is marketed as 2nd-class accommodation.

One can spot IC 432 further left, upon arrival from Emden Außenhafen. Until the late-90s, this sleeper service to Nice would also convey through-cars from Cologne or Dortmund in the Summer Peak.

SNCF_Corail_AcBcux_zA1.jpg (23103 bytes)

1st-class compartment of a "convertible" 1st/2nd-class Corail Couchettes car (AcBcux, VU-84), diagrammed on Corail Nuit 5507/6 (Ventimiglia-->Portbou).

Whenever a compartment is used as 1st-class accommodation, the middle couchettes are locked upwards, which leaves 4 couchettes. Unfortunately, there is no way whatsoever to apportion this extra room among both levels, as the top couchettes may not be lowered.
These dual-class couchettes are comfortable, but they remain somehow substandard to those of Ac9ux cars, viz. harder and narrower (10 compartments per car, instead of 9).

In spite of this, AcBcux are mostly used as 2nd-class cars, and when they feature 1st-class accommodation, they primarily replace antiquated UIC cars (Ac4Bc5x)...

As this service was merely branded "Corail Nuit" (and not "Corail Lunéa"), passengers had to prepare their couchette themselves, using bag beds and an outdated Scottish blanket...

2nd-class compartment of a "convertible" 1st/2nd-class Corail Couchettes car (AcBcux, VU-84), diagrammed on Corail Nuit 5507/6 (Ventimiglia-->Portbou).

Whenever a compartment is used as 2nd-class accommodation, the middle couchettes are unfolded. This means 6 couchettes per compartment, as on Bc10ux cars, yet with more comfort: textile covers, head elevation device and moquette on the floor.

As this service was merely branded "Corail Nuit" (and not "Corail Lunéa"), passengers had to prepare their couchette themselves, using bag beds and an outdated Scottish blanket...
