France - Guadeloupe - Grande Terre Remains of a agricultural railway built for exploitation of sugar cane. A fairly extensive railway network, 1.20 m gauge, existed in Guadeloupe until 1988, when the region suffered heavily from Hurricane Hugo. The railway network covered the northwest part of Grande Terre, that is to say the northern and relatively flat part of the island . After the damage caused by Hugo, this network was considered as not economically rebuildable. Even his center of gravity, sugar plant in Beauport, was then abandoned.
