MK4 NZ/DLV - Driving Luggage/Brake Van.

On Wednesday 30th June 1999 while accelerating away from a signal check at Slateford, Edinburgh, the 6U06 Ravenstruther - Drax coal (M.G.R) train hauled by 60043 suffered a coupling break between the 31st & 32nd wagons leaving the last 5 wagons fouling the main line into Edinburgh and causing disruption to services into Edinburgh.
One of two services to be signalled into Edinburgh 'Wrong Line' was GNER'S 1E09, 10:00 Glasgow Central - London Kings Cross service. With 56054 just visible on the right which was sent out to recover the wagons, 82207 leads the train 'Wrong Line' through Slateford station at 11:40.

Mk4_GNER_unrefurbished_DLV.jpg (61189 bytes)

Mk4 Driving/Luggage Trailer of GNER, seen at London King's Cross, awaiting departure to Edinburgh.

This car is very similar to the Mk3 DLVs of Virgin West Coast and used in push-pull operation with Mk2s and Mk3s. Yet, these Mk4s of GNER have narrower carbodies, as Mk4s cars were designed for tilting operation, which is more than ever a wishful thinking...

cl40-08669-b-jp.jpg (119418 bytes)

We like class 08/09 shunters or 'Gronks' as they come straight out of the days of steam. In fact their origin can be traced back to LMS in the 1930s based on an English Electric design. Today they come in a wide variety of liveries and with almost 1000 built by BR starting in 1953 and no replacement insight, they should be around for some time to come. They have a 350 hp engine/generator and a tractive effort of 35,000 lbs.

Normally seen from a passing train or resting between duties in a yard, it is a bonus to have one trundle past you whilst on a platform. Here 08669 in 'Wabtec' livery brings its GNER train through Alexandra Palace Station on the 6th September 2003.
