12_29.jpg (123235 bytes)

20015 & 20076 with a train of steel scrap. In October 1988 both these locos became scrap themselves.

I had just bought a zoom lens and this was one of the first shots I used it on. Even after all this time this is still one of my favourite rail photos.

On the wall there is the graffiti 'Doctor Buckton - closing the railways' - a reference comparing Ray Buckton, the train drivers union ASLEF General Secretary of the time, and Doctor Beeching who produced a report in 1963 which lead to many line closures in the UK. The Graffiti was probably daubed during the bitter Flexible Rostering strike of the previous winter.

20189.jpg (73107 bytes)

CLASS 20 (M.C.METALS YARD SHUNTER).

M.C.Metals yard shunting loco, formely Class 20 - 20189, is pictured at rest after shunting Class 101 2-car DMU 101652 (53198+54346) into the cutting dock at M.C.Metals, Glasgow on Thu 29-Jan-98 at 13:56.
Originally sold to M.C.Metals for scrap, this loco would almost certainly ended up as scrap had it not become apparent at the time that M.C.Metals required a larger locomotive capable of shunting around the yard the large volume of stock & heavier locomotives (such the class 45's) that were arriving quite regular, a job which the previous small shunting loco could'nt cope with. So to overcome the problem, it was decided to look over all the Class 20's that were currently in the yard for breaking for the one that was repairable and in the best overall condition, and then return it to service as the yard shunter by using parts & equipment taken from others. The honour of this befell 20189, but ultimately seen it shunt many of it's classmembers to their fate.

Class 20 in British Railways Green. I have been reminded recently at the difference in terminology between using British Rail (post 1969) and British Railways (post 1947). This photograph was taken at Loughborough Central Station, note the detail on the shunter signals and the very period atmosphere.

Only the earlier 'Choppers' had the circular headcode discs unlike later class 20's which were fitted with panels. 20001 and 20227 are working in multiple providing us with plenty of that 'class 20 sound'.
