EWS 37 472 preparing to take the Fort William portion of Caledonian Sleeper forward from Edinburgh.

The 37 ran round and coupled to the 5-coach sleeper (comprising of two Mk.3 sleeper coaches, a first class lounge, a staff coach, and a standard class coach) at 04.52 for the 05.11 departure. The train from Euston, standing at Edinburgh Waverley platform 10, was split earlier and the other portion taken away by Res Publica 47 747. During the winter of 1997, Scotrail withdrew the early morning service to Fort William, because of the additional costs of hiring that standard class coach from the Stagecoach group. A fuss was made by the local residents through the Rail Users Consultative Committee, and I am pleased to see that it has had an effect, with the service being reinstated for the summer timetable of 1998.
