East Lancashire Railway Diesels Class 40

On Mon 28th May 2007, Pathfinder Tours ran the 'Retro Retracer' railtour from Bristol to Leeds & return featuring classes of locomotives that played an important role in the development of freight by rail during the days of British Rail. For the 1Z40 15:00 Leeds - Crewe leg of the tour, which should have been a pair of DRS Class 20's, Class 40 - 40145, which is owned by the CFPS and operated on behalf of East Lancashire Railway Diesels, was substituted instead. In this illustration, taken at 17:44, 40145 stands at Crewe shortly having just arrived with the railtour.

This time powering the train and looking just as it should with no advertisement on the side 40145 takes its train through Bowes Park Station and into the nearby Bounds Green Depot. The date is Saturday 6th September 2003.

class40-har-jp.jpg (133469 bytes)

40145 passes through Harringey on the way to the nearby sidings for servicing. The paint on the loco was so new and shiny ...we thought we could actually smell it! We have certainly never seen a British loco before with a similar advertisement attached to it, but if it helps to keep the loco in top condition and covers the costs of a re-paint then you cannot blame people for taking advantage of it. It did though come as a shock we suspect to many lineside enthusiasts on the outward trip, but for the return journey it was removed. The date is Saturday 6th September 2003.

class40-pg-jp.jpg (139456 bytes)

Virtually bang on time having set off from Crewe early morning 40145 brings its 'Capital Whistler' Pathfinder Charter through Palmers Green N.London on its way to London Kings Cross...but what is this on the side! It says BEAVER...we understand they sponsored the loco's repaint into Rail Blue...so fair enough.

This is the only class 40 with main line certification. This is its first visit to the to the London area since it returned to traffic in the Autumn of 2002 and its also its first trip in Rail Blue having previously been in green. An opportunity to see and hear a 'Whistler' once more is something many rail enthusiasts will enjoy. The date is Saturday 6th September 2003.

history-bk-40145-logo-jp.jpg (138580 bytes)

HISTORY. 40145 created history in 2007 when it became the first member of the class to carry Large Logo Blue livery. Although not seen on class 40s in their BR days they would surely have done so if they had survived longer. Looking very smart it is seen here at Acton Mainline on the 6th September 2007.

40-d-deltic-jp.jpg (117232 bytes)

D9000 which later became 55022 is the first Deltic after the blue test loco. It was also the first diesel to be returned to the main line after withdrawal. Unfortunately the ownerning group got into financial difficulties and the loco has been languishing at Hornsey Depot since the Autumn of 2002. However the good news is that it has now been bought and although it is going to take a while it will now be restored for a second time and may well eventually be seen on the main line again. 40145 is doing the pushing at it passes Harringay station on the 25th January 2005.
