This loco which is now part of the Riviera fleet is still we are pleased to see being hired out to Frieghtliner. This however is the first week this year when 47829 'POLICE' has appeared on the WAGN 317 stock moves between Bedford and Hornsey and is pictured approaching Upper Holloway on the 3rd March 2005.

Now for those not familiar with the British traction scene, let me assure you that this is a genuine mainline loco. To mark the end of 47 8s on Virgin Cross Country services in August 2002, Virgin and the British Transport Police got together to have a 47 8 put into a POLICE livery, to help promote a safer railway and discourage vandalism. Whether you are a passenger waiting at a station, or someone trespassing on the railway few locos would turn more heads and stop people in their tracks than when 47829 suddenly appears. Hopefully by doing so it has made people think again about doing something, and you never know who might be on it. The loco is still in use today but has been 'transfered' to Freightliner and can now be seen 'escorting' car trains amongst other duties.

This picture was taken at Coventry in June 2002 on a Virgin Cross Country train to London Paddington.

47829 in its POLICE livery returns through Dawlish on Saturday 4th July 2002. This is not the first British loco to be painted into a POLICE livery. In the 1980s a class 37 was put into one for a British Rail advertisement. This was for a relatively short period and it never entered mainstream service in this condition.

Sometimes things go nicely to plan...sometimes you need a stroke of luck...and on other occasions you just get there too late! Always a 'spotters' favourite 47829 in 'Police' livery has been involved on some stock moves in the London area and on this day...the 9th September 2004...it is 'just seen' here powering through West Hampstead Thameslink towards Bedford. Arguably it makes a different kind of picture and it does provide a close-up view of a Porterbrook Mk 1 Barrier coach...but it wasn't what was planned!

In what is surely one of the most unusual liveries for any loco to carry, POLICE 47829 is seen here going through Kensington Olympia with a Thameslink stock move in early January 2004.
