47767 'Mappa Mundi' started out as D1672 in April 1965. For a loco approaching 40 years of age it certainly did not look out of place at London's Victoria station at the head of the VSOE's evening run through the English Countryside. Having only recently been given some reliability modifications and a paint into EWS red and gold, it looked well up to the task. Now for the bad news.. the engine caught fire during the trip but thanks to and I quote 'the profesionalism of the EWS driver' the fire was confined to the loco. What is a real shame though is that the loco 'looked' in such good condition before it set off, the snowplows at the front adding something to its appearence. Some old loco classes look as if they have come from a very different period, but the class 47 when spruced up can look as good today at the front of an express passenger or on a Pullmam charter as they ever did. They were the biggest single class of diesel locomotive with just over 500 built.

Today, around 70 examples are still in active service with various operators mostly on freight, stock moves, rescue duties, 'drags' where electric locos cannot use or have to go away from catenary and charter trains. Now they have just a handful of regular passenger runs, but can still be seen on First Great Western sleepers. One other train they are still very much associated with are the Serco test trains where they often appear in top & tail mode. They are powered by 2580 HP Sulzer engine and can achieve speeds approaching 100 MPH. The date of what could well turn out to be 47767's last journey was Friday 4th July 2003.

47767 'Mappa Mundi' is pictured at London's Victoria station about to set off with its VSOE charter, on which it subsequently caught fire. Mappa Mundi? Is a map of the world as seen in the 13th century. This unique British medieval treasure can be found at Hereford Cathedral. It is not the first loco to carry the name though as previously it was on a class 31. As for 47767 it is currently classified n/one, which tends to indicate its a case of mappa endi...not a bad run though just over 38 years.

47778 'Duke of Edinburgh's Award' certainly dose not look like a loco that has been around since the mid-1960's. The loco has not only benefited from a recent repaint but has also had some reliability enhancements done to it. Seen at Kings Cross London in April 2003.

Smartly painted EWS 47787 'Windsor castle' sits looking a bit out of place at the far platform of Edinburgh Waverley. This 47 is used for the royal train and bears a plaque saying it is at the service of the queen (perhaps not for much longer). Prior to that usage it was RES liveried 'victim support'. 6/9/2002

47793 in brand new EWS livery with the Orient Express'Northern Belle' special at platform 20 of Edinburgh Waverley. Perhaps sadly no longer RES 'St Augustine' , and looking very different in its new coat of paint, 47793's reincarnation is named 'Christopher Wren' . The repaint was done at Toton depot. 23/03/03

Really like this shop, with the Class 47's on the way out, already they have been displaced from Class One working on a regular basis, and even though they have been reincarnated as Class 57.

A number of Res 47s were put into EWS Red & Gold livery. This one 47758 is pictured on delightfully rural East Somerset Railway at their Diesel Gala in the Spring of 2003.
