The South Wales Main Line east of Newport station. Heading westbound is a freight train hauled by EWS Class 66 diesel locomotive 66167, while heading east is a First Great Western HST with an express passenger service to London Paddington. The photograph was taken from the rearmost carriage of the HST.

FGW-extra1stclass-01.jpg (141668 bytes)

Newport station in South Wales - a First Great Western HST on a scheduled Cardiff to London Paddington service is at platform 3. Rugby Union's Heineken Cup final between Munster and Biarritz was taking place at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium and so the service has been strengthened to 9 carriages to cater for the demand, this photo is of the additional first class carriage designated coach X.
I travelled from Bristol Parkway to Newport on this train's westbound journey earlier in the day, and even with the additional coach it was crush loaded!

Passing through Newport station in South Wales, using a line more frequently used by freight services is a First Great Western HST led by powercar 43027 on an extra service to Cardiff Central for Rugby Union's Heineken Cup final between Munster and Biarritz at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.
In the consist of this service were two of the the newly refurbished mark 3 coaches, the 1st class carriage (number 41003I think) is immediately behind the powercar.

UK125NEW.jpg (106561 bytes)

Not a brilliant shot due to incorrect exposure - bt a shot that shows how a little ingenuity can transform a mundane station shot into something unique. This shot shows a HST entering Newport General Station in Gwent on a London - Swansea working on 18 February 2004.

On the right, an Arriva Trains Wales shuttle service between here and Cardiff, top-and-tailed by locomotives, 50049 and 37425 - both in BR Large Logo livery, pulls into platform 1 with the Class 50 at the rear. The shuttle service is to cater for the extra demand generated by the Rugby Union Heineken Cup final between Munster and Biarritz at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.
