Gloucester-plat1_2-east-02.jpg (162272 bytes)

Looking east from the about half way between the concourse building and and western end of platform 2 at Gloucester station, about level with the signal.
The Central Trains Class 170 DMU on the left is at platform 4. The First Great Western HST is at platform 2 and gives an indication of just how long the platform is - there is room for at least a two-car DMU between the front of the HST and the end of the platform behind the camera (although the signal location would need changing), and platform 1, which is a continuation of the same platform face, is also long enoguh for a complete HST set. I know of no other station that can accomodate two HSTs end-to-end, let alone with room to spare!

Shot of First Group liveried Class 43, this livery was introduced in 2002, and by 2003 has been superceeded by an adapted version, which basically omits the white. The coaches are still in the 'Green & Gold' classic livery.

An interesting location on the Berk & Hants line starts at Crofton (the old pumping house seen behind the trees) and continues for about a mile or so towards Great Bedwyn. Behind the location the line stetches to road level and in front of the photograph to the right stretches of canal create an interesting foreground to photographs - one of the classic English locations.

daw-11-hst-fgw-jp.jpg (145486 bytes)

There are far fewer opportunities to get this close at lineside level in Britain than on the Continent so to able picture this First Great Western HST like this is a real bonus. It is seen approaching Dawlish on the 4th July 2002.

The nameplate on First Great Western Class 43 HST powercar 43139 Driver Stan Martin 25 June 1950 - 6 November 2004 at Bristol Parkway.
In a ceremony at Exeter St Davids on 25 June 2005, this locomotive was named after the Driver of the 17:35 First Great Western London Paddington to Plymouth service on 6 November 2004 that was tragically derailed in the Ufton Nervet rail crash, after striking a road vehcile on a level crossing.
