220016-BristolTM-platform1-01.jpg (163272 bytes)

Class 220 Virgin Voyager 220016 Midland Voyager is an unsual sight at platform 1 of Bristol Temple Meads station. Voyagers are normally seen on the much longer through platforms, while platform 1 normally plays host only to 143/150/153 DMUs on local services, mainly to Avonmouth/Severn Beach, or occasionally a 158 on a Portsmouth-Cardiff service.

This photo shows just why this is - a four-car Voyager only just fits on the platform.

BPW-westboundHST+eastboundVoyager-02.jpg (162071 bytes)

A westbound First Great Western enters Bristol Parkway while a northbound Class 220 Virgin Voyager departs. Note the contrasting length of the two express services - is it any wonder Cross-Country trains are often crush loaded?
This photograph was taken looking west from the bridge over the railway just off Hambrook Lane, about 1 third of a mile east of the station.

Virgin Voyager 220023 Mancunian Voyager at platform 4 of Bristol Temple Meads station shortly after arriving with a terminating southbound Cross-Country service. On the left First Great Western Class 150 DMU 150266 is stabled on the secondary through road between the platforms as the normal stabling siding just north of the station is out of action. This photograph gives an indication of how misty it was throught the west country, but it was even thicker the previous day.

Trailing cab of Virgin Voyager 220021 "Staffordshire Voyager" stands at platform 3 of Bristol Temple Meads with a nortbound service on 2nd August 2004.
I forgot to disable the flash when taking this picture from platform 5, but the effect on the livery is rather interesting.

BPW-43+220+66.jpg (163246 bytes)

Three different diesels at the eastern end of Bristol Parkway station. In the centre of the image First Great Western Class 43 HST powercar 43145 brings up the rear of a delayed westbound express service to Swansea as a Class 220 Virgin Voyager DEMU departs with a northbound Cross Country service - note the extreme difference in lengths of these two intercity express services!
On the right of the image EWS Class 66 diesel locomotive 66230 waits by the now disused Royal Mail platform with an eastbound freight service conveying coal, most probably from the South Wales coal field to Didcot Power Station.
In the background on the left is a long line of storred Royal Mail travelling post office vans awaiting their fate in Stoke Gifford rail yard on the south side of the station.
