James stands in front of a class 156 2-car DMU in Northern Spirit livery, though it is operated by Arriva, who have not reliveried them yet, probably in the expectation of the termination of their contract to run the "Northern" franchise, in late 2004.

These have a top speed of 70mph, pleasant interiors, generous luggage space and vast toilets. They are far superior to Arriva's inherited 142 "pacers". One can see these running the Middlesbrough - Sunderland - Newcastle - Carlisle service and ocassionally Metro Centre - Newcastle - Darlington - Middlesbrough - Saltburn.
