These units were the original units for the 'Clubman' services between London Marylebone and Birmingham via Leamington Spa, they also were the direct antecedents of the Class 170 Turbostar series of trains that have proved to be so successful. This unit is seen at Leamington Spa working to London.

My favourite class of DMU, and the original Clubmans are my favourite sub-class. AS mentioned these are Turbostars before they became trendy. A famous location at Kings Sutton, the problem with this location is that it is only photographable after around 3pm in an afternoon, Summer Saturday should be OK. As a matter of interest a public footpath runs from the station to this location.

One of the follow-on Clubman units seen at Leamington Spa July 2001. Basically these are the same as the 168/0 units apart from the front end styling, which betrays the 168/0 origins as being a Turbostar.

Class 168 (series three I suppose) Chiltern Railways 'Clubman' unit seen at Leamington Spa.

CLass 168 seen at Kings Sutton, I have to admit that I am a bit of a 'rivet counter' when it comes to taking photographs, and this is 'blow up' of the picture taken at Kings Sutton with 'lots of scenary' in it.

UK168CH.jpg (128508 bytes)

The date is 20th January 2001 at Marylebone Station. While these units are classified as Class 168 they - like their other 168 cousins are in reality Class 170 'Turbo's'. Basically the Class 168/0 were introduced as four car units, with the expansion of services furhter units were ordered but the 'classic' 170 styling was used. These cars were ordered as two car sets, and an extra coach removed from the Class 168/0 units making both 168/0 and 168/1 as three car units.

Classs 168 Turbo unit seen entering Dorridge station in the Birminghm Centro area. These units work selected services from London Marylebone, and share the route with Class 165 Turbo units. On the day of this photograph these units were in very short supply - many of the booked turns were worked with Class 165 Turbo units. This unit was working into Birmingham Snow Hiill.

DMU 168 110 is seen at Aylesbury on the 27th October 2003. Notice how the front of the 168 '1' series now looks very much like the class 170 Turbos that are now a common sight on railways in GB.
