08693-S240.jpg (125961 bytes)

EWS Class 08.

EWS's Component Recovery & Distribution Centre at Wigan has become the final resting place for many redundant locomotives. All locomotives that arrive here are destined for stripping of all reusable components, many of which are now obsolete and are costly and/or hard to obtain. These components are then distributed around to be reused on other sevicable examples in order to keep them going. In this view of 08693 & 37078 which were formerly in the Motherwell TMD scrapline and arrived here on the 12th August & 15th July respectively shows both loco's awaiting their inevitable fate at Wigan CR&DC on 14th August 1999.

We like class 08/09 shunters or 'Gronks' as they come straight out of the days of steam. In fact their origin can be traced back to LMS in the 1930s based on an English Electric design. Today they come in a wide variety of liveries and with almost 1000 built by BR starting in 1953 and no replacement insight, they should be around for some time to come. They have a 350 hp engine/generator and a tractive effort of 35,000 lbs.

Normally seen from a passing train or resting between duties in a yard, it is a bonus to have one trundle past you whilst on a platform. Here 08669 in 'Wabtec' livery brings its GNER train through Alexandra Palace Station on the 6th September 2003.
