D226 was one of two prototype locomotives built by English Electric at
Vulcan Foundry. The pair were identical except that D226 had electric
transmission and D227 had hydraulic transmission. The aim was to compare
the advantages and disadvantages of the two types of transmission. During
its BR life D226 (later renumbered D0226 to avoid duplication with a Class
40 loco) clearly proved its superiority over D227. Now preserved at the
Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, D226 has been named VULCAN.
