86 207 City of Lichfield with Virgin Trains terminating service from Bristol Temple Meads, at Edinburgh Waverley platform 10. The driver of the late-arriving service rushed off after the train had arrived, forgetting to lock the cab door shut, against former BR regulations. This was the sort of circumstances under which the Abbeyhill accident occured in 1995, a ScotRail class 37, with brakes not fully applied and cab door left open, rolled down the hill onto the ECML, crashing head-on into an HST arriving from Cornwall.

86212.jpg (82913 bytes)

86 212 'Preston Guild' at Glasgow Central, stabled alongside a Strathclyde 303 EMU. The loco was later decoupled and the front train taken away by an unidentified class 90. It then left permissively behind the ECS. It was a little alarming watching both trains moving independently out of the platform, but the rear driver is obviously aware of the fact that he must proceed very cautiously since the front train was no less than 10 yards ahead.

86 213 Lancashire Witch, with Virgin Crosscountry terminating service from Birmingham New Street, at Edinburgh Waverley platform 10. Compare the location of the 30 mph speed restriction indicator on the left with the photo of 86 207, doing so will yield an idea of the accuracy required from the drivers of long trains when stopping at a platform.

Virgin Crosscountry 86 214 seen here in platform 11, Edinburgh Waverley, with a full Virgin Mk.2F rack ready for departure to Bristol Temple Meads. The name plate reads ‘Sans Parell’ ~ anyone good at Latin? I am guessing that it means ‘unrivalled’ ~ sans without, parell (derivative) parallel.

86219 'Phoenix' looks a sorry sight as it stands, deviod of both bogies, on blocks inside the main workshop at Railcare's Springburn Works, Glasgow on Sat 15th May 1999. This may be one Phoenix that may not rise again from the ashes as it is unknown whether this loco will retun to traffic or yield valuable spares to keep others in traffic.

Okay, you got to believe me now, these are bits from the Intercity-Swallow 86 226 ‘Charles Rennie Mackintosh’, photographed just after I’ve done the classic pic of the loco. I must have taken about 10 pics of just that 86! I never knew that the class 86 had rivets too (see right hand pic)...

86226ics-corridor.jpg (63900 bytes)

Corridor side of Intercity-Swallow 86 226, ‘Charles Rennie Mackintosh’, unusually stabled at the Motorail Terminal in place of a class 90, probably as a result of the failure of the booked 90 prior to depature from Euston. The Sleeper service used to be worked by 86s; I remember the time when I travelled up in an Mk.II coach (yes, in these days the sleeper offered seating accommodation) and it was worked by some 86 named ‘The East Midland Courier’ which I have not seen since. Perhaps it was de-named soon after? I remembered now bumpy that ride was, which was probably why -other than the fact that EWS doesn’t have any 86/2s- they are now using class 90s instead. Scotrail saved the Sleeper service when it was close to being axed by Intercity West Coast, but at the same time they withdrew the seating accommodation which meant that I have never had another chance to travel on the Sleeper. I guess you can’t have everything.

Come to think of it, isn’t it kinda odd that the 90 doesn’t have corridor-side windows? I do remember something along the lines of a ‘central’ walkway in the 91 because of its modular design. Is this the case for the 90 as well?

86228-a-jp.jpg (110383 bytes)

86228 'Vulcan Heritage' is seen on what could be one of its last duties at South Kenton on Saturday 28th June 2003. The loco is reported as being withdrawn from traffic on July 1st, and with more Pendolinos entering service it is one of Virgin's 86s not likely to remain in the active pool. Class 86s first entered traffic in the mid-1960s and are therefore approaching 40 years old. A magazine recently stated than some locos had travelled over 6 million miles during this time. They are also currently in service with Freightliner and with Anglia. The freight examples should see continued use for a while yet, but Anglia will probably make increasingly less use of their 86s as they switch to class 90s.
