This photo of the GNER cast emblem was photographed from a Mk.4 coach which is normally operated in fixed-formation stock with class 91 electric locomotives, even though recently I have observed many trainsets which were split up completely at depots. The emblems are not attached to the locomotives themselves; the locomotives only have vinyl lettering for their names. GNER’s new stupid location for loco numbers means that now all class 91s look the same on photo, so I could have claimed this was any number and would probably have got away with it (unless, of course, some one was sad enough to know which locos have gold lettering and which ones have white lettering.) It is probably worth asking why GNER have their locos painted different... can they really not afford the bit of gold paint? I can understand why not all of their coaches have cast emblems... but it does seem somewhat odd that Britain’s best intercity operator can’t afford a fleck of gold paint. Maybe they are trying to add interest to their loco fleet. Surely by actually naming them properly instead of spending ages debating how to name them is a better way to enhance the individual characters of the locomotives? As far as I know there’s only one named locomotive, The Samaritian. Hmm, good name, sure. Not-in-service ex-‘Scottish Enterprise’ 91 019 pulled up to the signal at the end of Platform 3 at Peterborough Station on 15 March 1999. As can be seen the first coach was drawn up well beyond the end of the platform, this was because Platform 3 was not supposed to be used for Mk.IV sets but as the set was not in service at the time this didn’t matter. The enginner (and three other members of the crew, two of them riding in the back cab) was seen getting out of the cab, and appeared to have walked off leaving the cab unlocked. My train (northbound HST ‘the Northern Lights’ at 11.15) arrived before I could see what happened with the 91 019.

GNER Class 91. Due to an incident in the early hours of Mon 16th Nov 1998 involving the 1S25, 21:30 London Euston - Inverness/Aberdeen/Fort William hitting two stolen vans placed on the main line immediately to the east of Slateford station, all services in & out of Edinburgh which use this line through Slateford were subject to delay, cancellation or re-routing. As the incident took place immediately after the Junction for the 'Freight only' Edinburgh Suburban lines, certain passenger service were diverted via this line in & out of Waverley. One such service to do so was the 1E09, 10:00 Glasgow Central - London KX GNER service which was dragged past Meggatland, on the Craiglockhart Jct - Slateford part of the Edinburgh sub line, by 47635 with 91024 dead at the rear of the train.

Would anyone believe me if I claimed that was the TOPS data panel from 91 026 which was taken on platform 21 of Edinburgh Waverley station? Someone can probably work it out from the distribution of dirt on the panel! This loco was at the back of a train heading for King’s Cross. If anyone needs that pic (it’s not very good, because platform 21 really isn’t the ideal place for locomotive photography), please e-mail me and I’ll send you the pic. I had fun trying to get this pic: you have to squeeze your head in between coach A and the locomotive. I figured that if the loco is about to move and crush my head, I’d hear the thryistor chopper being powered up and make that hoovering noise, but it still frightened me a little. Another shot of gold-lettered GNER class 91 heading the wrong way. These shots aren’t that interesting anymore, they quite often work the wrong-way nowadays. It’s strange given the amount I travel on the ECML that I haven’t yet been hauled wrong-way.
