Class 311, 3-car 25kV ac/50Hz O/H EMU

Based at the Summerlee Heritage Park in Coatbridge, where it is seen on Sun 16th April 2006 at 13:33, is Class 311 EMU, No 311103 (76433+62174+76414). Although somewhat similar in appearance to the Class 303's which were built by Pressed Steel of Glasgow between 1959-1961, 19 Class 311 units were built in 1967 by Cravens of Sheffield for the 'Glasgow South Side' electrification to Gourock & Wemyss Bay.
During the mid/late 1980's when the 303's were going hrough a reurbishment programme, the Class 311's were not included in this and this was to spell the end of the Class 311's which were finally all withdrawn by the early 1990's. Two units, No's 311103 & 311104 were taken into the departmental fleet in 1994 as 'Sandite/De-Icing' units numbered 936103 & 936104.
In 1999 both units were withdrawn again, and for 936104, it was for good as it was scrapped in 2002, while 936103 fared a little better when it was donated to the Summerlee Heritage Park. However, due to space committments with upcoming redevelopment on the site, one of the driving cars is faced with the propect of being scrapped.
