Southern Class 377 EMU 377145, like all new-build third rail units in Great Britain has a recess in the roof of one of the cars to house a pantograph. The purpose of this is to allow conversion to overhead current collection in the future. Although I am not aware of any planned conversions, the Health and Safety Executive are known to have a dislike for electrified rails - for example all new electrified railway in the country must use OHLE, although extensions to existing third rail systems are permissible (at least for now).
