Farewell to Slam-door units and to Connex running the South Eastern Trains franchise...

A new livery is expected once South Eastern Trains has been refranchised by early-2005. 08th December 2003. P.L.Guillemin (plguillemin@yahoo.fr) |

on the main line. The date is the 20th July 2005 as they head for nearby Victoria.

Now this is the ECS for the VERY LAST main line slam door train to run out of the the Capital!
It is seen heading towards London's Victotia Station at South Croydon on Saturday 26th November
2005 to form the 11.05 departure to Brighton.

VEP 3535 of the three 4 car units forming the last slam door out of the Capital is seen at its FINAL final destination
Brighton carrying the headboard Sussex Slammer. The date of this HISTORIC day for trains in SE England
was Saturday 26th November 2005 and the train that formed it was the 11.05 departure from London Victoria.
All is not lost though should you still wish to travel on one of these CLASSIC third rail DC units as although they will no longer be used on the main line, they have been given special permission to run on the Lymington Harbour Branch from Brockenhurst in the New Forest. Traffic did not justify the intoduction of new 450 units so South West Trains are running two class 421 3Cig units that have been put into heritage liveries...one in Green and the other in Blue Grey. We certainly plan to take a trip down there ourselves, enjoy a run and picture the line which we understand is now more like a preserved railway than todays modern mediocrity!

Fleet, on a dismal Saturday evening, 11th June 2005.
The Staff-only edition of the South West Trains "Seaside Slammer" railtour (17.08 ex-Weymouth) passes through Fleet on the up main line, no more than a minute behind time, in hot pursuit of the 17.00 ex-Weymouth service. Class 423 4-VEP unit no. 3417 "Gordon Pettitt" brings up the rear, with Class 421 3-CIG unit no. 1498 "Farringford" leading. I know that this is a poor photograph, and I have tried to improve it a little bit, but I want to submit it as part of the historical record. Photo and scan by Mark Ziemba. |

These old Southern Slam Door units were all due to have gone by this year but delays in introducing new
stock mean that many with survive until 2005. This one 3551 currently on a publically operated South Central service
was pictured at Portslade on the 2nd April 2004.

The 4 VEP 3417 assisted by 73109 made its way to East Grinstead on the 17th January 2009 and then
onto the Bluebell Railway where work on their extension continues. This was not only a very unusual
move as the Bluebell Railway mantains a steam only policy but also a very brief one as a few days later it
went to Eastleigh where the well cared for unit that is in full working order can be better looked after.
Alongside is one of the latest EMUs a class 377.
