Bar area of a Bar/Standard-class car of a Class 442 of South West Trains, seen at London-Waterloo, upon arrival from Portsmouth Harbour.

While 442s run on relatively short-distance Intercity services, the bar corner is usually very popular. This car has a buffet counter, but it is usually closed. Catering is provided through a trolley-service.

One can spot the notice on the smoking ban recently imposed in 442s. This is due to the air-conditioning system, which tends to spread the smoke all over the train.

These units are often regarded as the best "Intercity" rolling-stock in Britain, although the Wessex Electrics ran under Network South East colours, not those of Intercity, in BR days.

They were refurbished and reliveried in 2000.
