001_Bracknell_458.jpg (149956 bytes)

Two four coach South West Trains EMUs, Class 458 headed by 8030 arriving at Bracknell from Waterloo
heading to Reading.

All 30 sets of this class are allocated to East Wimbledon and the units operate on the Waterloo-Guildford/Alton
and Reading lines.

8030 is the very last set to be built and all sets are painted in the latest South West Trains livery.
The front of the Class 458s incorporates a door to enable communication between units. This requirement
has meant curious design of the front end with very cramped driving position and restricted vision.

Photographed 1st February 2007.

Class 458s have been the least successful of the new EMUs and in theory were all down for withdrawal by the end of June 2006 when this one was pictured in SW London. They still seem to turn up on the occasional service train thought but will require some modifications to their internal electronic information display at least...which is below the minimum agreed size...if they are to make a full return.

Slowly the Class 458 Juniper units are entering service, primarily between London and Alton via Woking. This unit was pictured at Basingstoke on test runs between Basingstoke and the west. It was originally envisaged that these units would work the London - Basingstoke semi-fasts, if this occurs waits to be seen. Alsthom have had a lot of problems getting these 'Juniper' units into service

UK458Z.jpg (161312 bytes)

Class 458 approaches Sunningdale on 22nd February 2003. This photograph has been cropped from the original file to illustrate the 'proxy' zoom facilty argued by Nikon not to put include a high zoom on the model (the latest version does have an adequate zoom). As you can see because of the large size of the original (the file comes in at around 14MB) the photo can indeed be zoomed wihtout loss of quality.

A picture that tells a story. When SWT became to first TOC to order new trains the Class 458 order was seen as a precursor to a larger order replacing Slam Door stock, the 400 series of EMU's. Due to technical difficulties it has been announced that in 2005 the CLass 458 Juniper units will be returned to owners. To replace the 400 series SWT ordered the Desiro unit - this picture was taken at Clapham Junction in early February 2004.
