Bo Battery Electric Loco - Strathclyde PTE Underground.

For engineering work on the Glasgow Underground system while the power is switched off, SPTE have a few battery electric loco's for hauling engineeers trains round the system. In this view, on of these loco's - L3 'Rank Bajin' - is seen inside the works shed at the SPTE underground depot at Broomloan, Glasgow on Sat 15th May 1999.
This loco, which was built in 1977 by Clayton Equipment, Hatton, is powered by 94 cell chloride lead acid batteries giving a nominal 188volts. Traction is by two Clayton M5 motors rated at 35.6kW each.
