Angel station on London Underground's Northern Line has an unusually wide southbound platform. The reason for this, according to Wikipedia's article is that it was originally built with a single island platform serving both lines, however this was too narrow for the number of people using it. In 1992 a new tunnel was excavated for the northbound platform and the southbound platform was extended to occupy the space formerly occupied by the northound tracks.
