northboundbranches-01.jpg (109617 bytes)

The line diagram maps in the cross passage between northbound Northern Line platforms at Kennington tube station. The Bank and Charing Cross branches diverge immediately south of the station and take different routes through Central London before rejoining again at Camden Town. North of Camden Town the line again splits into two branches, to Edgware and High Barnet/Mill Hill East.

platform1-01.jpg (161980 bytes)

Looking north from the southern end of Platform 1 at Kennington tube station, this platform is served by northbound trains on the Charing Cross branch of the Northern Line - the Charing Cross branch diverges a short distance south of the station and calls at the adjacent platform 1.

platform2-01.jpg (162505 bytes)

Platform 2 at Kennington tube station, this platform is served by southbound trains on the Charing Cross branch of the Northern Line, which merges with the Bank branch a short distance south of the station.
Off peak, around half the trains arriving at this platform terminate and passengers must cross to platform 4 to continue their southbound journey on a Bank branch train. The reason for this is there is a reversing loop south of the staiton, accessible only from the Charing Cross branch, that leads only to the northbound Charing Cross branch platform - see this excellent 3D diagram.

The southern end of Platform 3 at Kennington tube station, this platform is served by northbound trains on the Bank branch of the Northern Line - the Charing Cross branch diverges a short distance south of the station and calls at the adjacent platform 1. The train about to arrive is a 1995 Stock train on a service to High Barnet.

platform4-01.jpg (159184 bytes)

The southern end of Platform 4 at Kennington tube station, this platform is served by southbound trains on the Bankbranch of the Northern Line, which merges with the Charing Cross branch a short distance south of the station.
Although about a quarter of southbound services terminate at Kennington, almost all of these are Charing Cross branch trains. The reason for this is there is a reversing loop south of the staiton, accessible only from the Charing Cross branch, that leads only to the northbound Charing Cross branch platform. Trains can reverse from the Bank branch, but as this involves a reversing siding it is less preferable. See this excellent 3D diagram.

southboundtunnel-01.jpg (118520 bytes)

Looking south from the southern end of Platform 4 at Kennington tube station, this platform is served by southbound trains on the Bankbranch of the Northern Line, which merges with the Charing Cross branch a short distance south of the station. The shunt signal viisble below the first signal on the right-hand tunnel wall presumably controls access to the reversing siding.

tickethall-01.jpg (161496 bytes)

The ticket hall at Kennington station on London Underground's Northern Line. The access to the platforms here is by lift rather than escalator, and rather than wait people often choose to descend the 79-step emergency stairs.
This station is the southern diverging point of the Charing Cross and Bank branches of the NOrthern Line, so the display screens detail the destination of the next four services from all four platforms. Note that clocks displayed beneath the screens are not keeping exactly the same time - the one on the right is 1 second ahead; this is not a trick of the photography, it is a single photograph taken with an exposure time of 1/25th of a second.
