Shoreditch-busyplatform-01.jpg (160892 bytes)

Shoreditch tube station, until it closed permanently on the 10th of June this was the northern terminus of the East London Line - although it was only open at peak hours and on Sunday mornings.
The story of Shoreditch is one of gradual decline - formerlly a two-platform station on the line from Liverpool Street to Whitechappel, New Cross and beyond. Although through passenger working ceased some time previously it wasn't until the electrification of the Great Eastern lines in the 1960s that goods trains finally stopped. With the reduction in traffic came its reduction to just one platform and restricted opening hours. Finally on the 10th of June 2006 it closed for good, due to be replaced by a new station at Shoreditch High Street on the extended East London Line in a couple of years.

Shoreditch-rearcabclearbell-01.jpg (161742 bytes)

While it was open, drivers used to "step back" at Shoreditch tube station, meaning that the driver of a terminating train would leave the cab at the front (rear from the point of view of the next service) and ring this bell on the wall of the platform to indicate he'd shut the cab down and vacated it. As soon as the train arrived into the station a driver waiting by the new front of the train would get into that cab, wait for the bell and then power up and drive the train on its next service. The first driver then walks the length of the platform so that he is in position to take the next train out when it arrives.
