gb-T+Wmetro-NorthSheilds01.jpg (88990 bytes)

A view from the front window of Tyne and Wear Metro train 4067 at North Shields station. Although in the early days of the network the bay platform saw regular services, it is currently only infrequently used.

Sunderalnd station is shared between the Tyne and Wear Metro system and mainline services. The signal half way along the western platform marks the divide between Metro (behind) and Mainline (infront) stopping areas. The train in the distance is a northbound Yellow line Metro service towards Newcaslte.

The view through the front window of a Tyne and Wear Metro train as it approaches North Shields station with a coast-bound Yellow line service from St James. The now seldom used, but still operational, bay platform 3 is on the right of the picture, while the two through platforms are in the centre of shot.

The view through the front window of a Tyne and Wear Metro train as it pulls into North Shields station with a coast-bound Yellow line service from St James.
Originally buiilt in 1890, this station was redeveloped along with much of central North Shields was redeveloped in the latter part of the 20th century. From here the line procedes towards Tynemouth through a short tunnel underneath the town centre - one of the few tunnels outside central Newcastle.

Park Lane interchange station on the Tyne and Wear Metro network, seen here through the window of a South Hylton-bound train, was purpose built as part of the metro extension in 2002. Located directly beneath the main bus station in Sunderland city centre, the station offers direct interchange to a number of destinations.

gb-twmetro-station-pelaw01.jpg (156475 bytes)

Pelaw Tyne and Wear Metro station, looking west along the eastbound platform. This station is the southern diverging point of the Green and Yellow lines, with the former continuing to South Shields and the latter over tracks shared with mainline trains to Sunderland and then onwards to South Hylton. Prior to the opening of the Sunderland extension in 2002, this was the terminus of the yellow line and it is still used as a reversing point for several services a day with trains emptying here and running empty into sidings at the east end of the station.

The tracks to the right of the picture are the Network Rail mainlines between Newcaslte and Sunderland, which are still fully segregated from the Metro at this point, the systems merge at a newly constructed junction southeast of the station.

gb-twmetro-station-pelaw04.jpg (158492 bytes)

The view through the rather grubby front window of Tyne and Wear Metro train 4089 as it waits at Pelaw station. The large mirror is the common method employed at surface stations to enable the drivers to see the length of their train.
The diverging route at this signal is into the sidings used to reverse trains terminating here, the running routes to both South Shields and Sunderland are both straight ahead, diverging further down the line.

gb-twmetro-station-shiremoor01.jpg (131245 bytes)

The view through the rather grubby front window of Tyne and Wear Metro train 4089 as it arrives at Shiremoor station. The amount of vegetation between and beside the rails ahead suggest a much less frequent service than the 6 trains per hour that serve this station in both directions during the peak.

The view through the rather grubby front window of Tyne and Wear Metro train 4089 as it approaches the terminal station South Hylton with a Yellow line service from St James via the North Tyneside Coast and Newcastle and Sunderland city centres.
There is considerable fore-shortening in this image - far from being shorter than normal the platform is actually one of the longest on the network.

The view through the rather grubby front window of Tyne and Wear Metro train 4089 of the buffer stop at South Hylton. This is the terminus of the Yellow line and of this service from St James, having travelled over 53km and stopped at 45 intermediate stations along the way - including two visits to Monument station.

gb-twmetro-station-southhylton04.jpg (75624 bytes)

A merged view of the main shelter and ticket machine area at South Hylton station - the southern terminus of the Tyne and Wear Metro Yellow line. This station was purpose built for the opening on the 31st of March 2002 of the Metro extension from Pelaw to Sunderland along tracks shared with mainline trains, and then to this station over part of the long disused former mainline to Durham. Although still owned by Network Rail, the section from Sunderland is served only by the Metro.

At present South Hylton is served by 5 trains per hour, but poor patronage between here and University station means that operator Nexus plans to cut this by 50% from December this year.

gb-twmetro-station-southshields01.jpg (155859 bytes)

South Shields Tyne and Wear Metro station is on a bridge over one of the main shopping streets. The original station was located on land currently used only as sidings to the east (left) of the present station. When the Metro arrived in 1984, the one of the two tracks over the bridge was removed and and the single platform station built on the land it occupied.

gb-twmetro-station-stadiumoflight01.jpg (157284 bytes)

The view through the rather grubby front window of Tyne and Wear Metro train 4089 as it approaches the Stadium of Light station in Sunderland. Named for the home stadium of local football team Sunderland United, it is possible to travel direct from here to St James station in Newcastle - less than two minutes walk from St James' Park, home of local rivals Newcastle United FC. Although possible to travel direct, it is about and hour quicker to change trains at Monument and cut out the North Tyneside Loop section of the Yellow line.

The overrun tunnel at St James station, the terminus of the Tyne and Wear Metro Yellow line. This shows how all the stations were originally constructed for trains of three two-car units, but economies imposed meant that the system operates trains of two two-car units only.
