Scammel-jpl.jpg (121983 bytes)

This type of vehicle came into being in 1934 as a result of the railways trying to find something suitable to replace the horse drawn method. It was therefore refered to as the'mechanical horse' featuring automatic coupling to a trailor and with its single front wheel remarkable manouverability. The vehicle shown would first have appeared in the late 1940s and production continued until 1967. It would be fair to say that no other vehicle is more associated with British Railways than the 'Scarab'. This gem was spotted at the Crewe Works Open Weekend 2003.

As we waited for the bus this vintage car appeared leaving Havenstreet which just had to be photographed. What we were not expecting to see was 'Southern Railway' on the side and a reference to Signal Engineers. This I think qualifies it for the 'Gallery'. The date is August 30th 2003.

lon-icon-c-taxi-jp.jpg (106866 bytes)

A London icon dating from the 1960s is this black taxi-cab. This particular example now carries advertising for Southern Train services to Gatwick Airport...an alternative to the Gatwick Express and somewhat cheaper. There is a possibility that the dedicated service might end with the 460s taking regular passengers and extending them to Brighton to ease overcrowding. Picture taken December 2004.

A very close relative of the steam loco is of course a steam driven traction engine. This one was seen departing from the Colne Valley Railway on a visit we made in the early 1990s.
