RydeTunnel-frombridge-01.jpg (162608 bytes)

Looking south from the bridge between Ryde hoverport and Ryde Esplanade rail and bus station on the Isle of Wight. The tunnel visible is the principal reason for the use of ex-London Underground tube-guage trains on the island.
The crossover in the foreground is the most northerly set of points on the island, meaning that as only one platform at Ryde Pier Head station is structurally sound, only one platform at Ryde Esplanade (about a hundred yards behind the camera) is in use.

Snow_Hill_Tunnel.jpg (50199 bytes)

Northern Portal for the Snow Hill Tunnel. This tunnel was closed from the 60s to 1988. It was reinstated so as to launch Thameslink services from Brighton to Bedford, kind of London RER or Crossrail...

The tracks to the left are those for the Moorgate Branch. These were extensively used until the reinstatement of the Snow Hill Tunnel. Nowadays, only a few peak services use it, and the Moorgate Branch will close once Thameslink 2000 sees light, so as to make room to extend Farringdon platforms for 12-car formations.

The catenary ends at the portal. Thameslink services use 750V DC live rail between the portal and their stop at Farringdon, where they switch to 25kV AC overhead.

10th December 2003.

whitrope1999_1.jpg (126355 bytes)

11 Dec 1999, Whitrope, Scotland
South portal of Whitrope Tunnel located south of Hawick on the disused Waverley Route running from Carlisle to Edinburgh. There are plans to reopen the section north of Galashiels for commuter trains and a southern part to Riccarton Junction serving the Kielder Forest for timber transport. Plans for the middle section are less advanced, but this would provide additional transport capacity on rails in and out of Scotland.
