Bluebell_1966_2-2-0GWT_The_Blue_Circle__Aveling_Porter_9449_1926__Sheffield_Park.jpg (126709 bytes)

Bluebell_1966_2-2-0GWT. UK Heritage Steam 1960s and 1970s. Bluebell Railway Open Day 1966: a most unusual locomotive is seen here in The Blue Circle. The Class TJ 2-2-0GWT (Geared Well Tank) (Aveling Porter 9449/1926), was basically a traction engine on rails. The last railway locomotive built by Aveling Porter, it worked in the cement industry until 1962, to be bought by the Bluebell Railway two years later. The 2-2-0GWT is coupled to ex-LNWR Observation Car No.1503, built in 1913 for the scenic Llandudno Junction to Blaenau Festiniog line in North Wales. Not really suitable for the Bluebell’s purposes, it is today based on the Nene Valley Railway. Within the station, note the collection of enamel advertising signs and (old) “penny-in-the-slot” weighing machine; all genuine antiques from a time long gone. roger.griffiths@hotmail.com
