Brading-directionoftravel-01.jpg (163664 bytes)

Only one platform at Brading station on the Isle of Wight is now used, although the footbridge to the former island platform looks to be in good repair. The sign advises passengers which direction the other stations on the line are.
Until the 1950s Brading was the junction of the Ryde-Ventnor Town (now closed south of Shanklin) line with the completely closed branch line to Bembridge.

Brading-fromnorth-01.jpg (162350 bytes)

Looking south from the northern end of Brading station on the Isle of Wight.
Only one platform is now used, although the footbridge to the former island platform on the left looks to be in good repair. Until the 1950s Brading was the junction of the Ryde-Ventnor Town (now closed south of Shanklin) line with the completely closed branch line to Bembridge.
The restored station building on the open platform is home to a small exhibition about the station and railways on the island in general. There is a local group hoping to refurbish the buildings on the other platform and the signal box (out of shot to the left of the photograph).

Brading-fromsouth-01.jpg (158568 bytes)

Looking south from the northern end of Brading station on the Isle of Wight.
Only one platform is now used, although the footbridge to the former island platform on the right looks to be in good repair. Until the 1950s Brading was the junction of the Ryde-Ventnor Town (now closed south of Shanklin) line with the completely closed branch line to Bembridge.
The restored station building on the open platform is home to a small exhibition about the station and railways on the island in general. There is a local group hoping to refurbish the buildings on the other platform and the signal box (the roof of which is just visible behind the building on the island platform).

Brading-singnalbox-01.jpg (163832 bytes)

The disused and overgrown signal box at Brading station on the Isle of Wight. The box was built by the Southern Railway at the junction between the Ryde-Ventnor Town main line and Brading-Bembridge branch line. Its fortunes declined in the 1950s when the branch line was closed and the main line truncated at Shanklin, it finally closed in circa 1989 when all signalling on the island was centralised at Ryde St John's Road by the Network SouthEast division of British Rail.
