The northern entrance to Clifton Down railway station in the Clifton area of Bristol. The westbound platform, for trains towards Avonmouth and Severn Beach, is over the bridge through the second arch straight ahead while the eastbound platform for trains towards Bristol Temple Meads is downstairs through the arch to the right.

fromroadbridge-01.jpg (156950 bytes)

Clifton Down railway station on the severn Beach Line serves the Clifton area of Bristol, and is a short walk from the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge. This photograph is taken looking east from the bridge that carries St John's Road over the railway a short distance west of the station.
The station building on the left is now no longer in railway use but home to an Australian theme pub. The car park and buildings on the right, inlcuding the large shopping centre behind the westbound platform, are built on the site of the station's large goods yard.

sign-03.jpg (163454 bytes)

These signs are located at the bottom of the stairs to the eastbound platform at Clifton Down railway station in Bristol. The top sign, that obviously dates from the British Rail era, is the only time I've seen the name "City-Severn Line" used. All the other publicity, including the platform signs, refer to the railway between Bristol Temple Meads and Severn Beach as the Severn Beach Line.
The bottom sign is directing passengers headed for Bristol Zoo to walk along the eastbound platform and take the exit at the western end onto Whatley Road. The Zoo is about a ¾-mile walk from the station and so in times gone by, Clifton Down was the destination for many excursion trains.

The western end of Clifton Down railway station in Bristol, although a 6-car stopping mark is provided on the wall to the left, trains on the Severn Beach Line are rarely longer than 4 cars in the peak hours and half that off peak.
