Summary Depature boards at Cardiff Central, UK
As with many other large interchange stations in the UK, summary departure boards are almost always found near the stairs to other platforms, next to the paper timetables. Cardiff Central is no exception, with four summary screens located next to the stairwells on every platform.
These boards are fairly crisp and clear to read, however they have a very disconcerting habit of switching between english and welsh every ten seconds. Perhaps separate sets of screens for english and welsh speakers would be better. Additionally, the announcements are always made in both welsh and english, which does tend to make the announcements rather long and laborious.
Also, to prove it can happen, even in the UK, check out the "On Time"s on this departure board.

CDF_flag.jpg (95389 bytes)

BR flag at Cardiff Central, UK
Despite still being the accepted symbol for "Railway" "Station" and the symbol promoted by ATOC under the "National Rail" banner, it is rare to see the BR "double-arrow" symbol so prominently displayed nowadays. There is some thought, however, that the SRA are pushing operators to ensure that the BR symbol is still clearly displayed near station entrances.

Platforms 1 and 0 at Cardiff Central, UK
Platform 0 was originally rebuilt for use on match-days at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff (a few minutes walk from the station). However, it was quickly realised by the station management that integrating Platform 0 with the rest of the station and making it a normal service platform would increase capacity and flexibility at the station. In order to keep the platform numbering in sequence, it was decided to number this new platform zero - the only example I know of of a platform 0 in the UK.
This is one of the four big passenger enhancements seen on the Great Western Main Line since privatisation. The other three are the new Platform 4 at Swindon, building a new station at Bristol Parkway, and re-opening platforms 13 and 15 at Bristol Temple Meads.

CDF_plat1.jpg (145808 bytes)

Platform Departure Board (Platform 1) at Cardiff Central, UK
These are the new Tube-style (also called Countdown-style) departure boards being installed by many TOCs, notably Great Western, South West Trains, Connex, South Central and Thameslink.
They are ideal for the intensive services provided by many of the suburban operators (SWT, CX, TL, SC), but of slightly more dubious value on big Intercity stations like Cardiff, as the irregular traveller can be initially confused by them, in a way they are not by TV monitors, since some interpret the "1st, 2nd and 3rd" as "Platform 1, 2 and 3, not First train from this platform, second train from this platform...." It is alway interesting watching the orders swap around at some stations, as the CIS tries to work out which train will arrive first.
The layout is always the same:
First line - "1st", timetabled departure time, Destination, Expected time
Second line - Scrolling R-L - Calling points, and additional information (such as catering, unusual formation, location of First Class)
Third line - Swaps between second and third train's details.

Platform 0 of Cardiff Central railway station, a former staff-only platform mainly used for commuter services during peak hours and the Central Trains service to Nottingham via Gloucester and Birmingham New Street, is perhaps the only station so numbered in Great Britain.
This photograph also illustrates the bilingual English/Welsh signage common to all stations in Wales. Since Arriva Trains Wales took over the franchise, the station anouncements are also now Bilingual.

CardiffCentral-subwaysign.jpg (88660 bytes)

Bilingual English and Welsh signage in the subway between platforms at Cardiff Central railway station. The only thing that is not in two languages is the directions to platforms 3 and 4, as the Welsh for "platform" is "platfform" I suspect many English speakers may not even spot the difference - the numbers are separated by the English ampersand (&) rather than the welsh "a" (which is the word for "and" when the following word does not start with a vowel, in which case it is "ac").
