Looking west from the western end of Castle Cary station in Somerset. The station is located where it is, about a mile north of the town, because of the junction between the West of England Main Line, which takes the right hand route to Taunton, and the Heart of Wessex Line to Weymouth which takes the left hand route.

Just north of the footbridge at Castle Cary railway station in Somerset, these catchpoints protect the exit from the down-side sidings north of the station to the running line to and from Weymouth. The curious thing about the alignment is that any vehicles being caught by these points will immediately collide with the footbridge - almost certainly causing damage to both.

The southern end of Castle Cary railway station in Somerset, viewed from by the entrance to the car park. Platforms 1 on the right and 2 in the centre of the station are significantly longer than platform 3 on the far left, the reason for this is the mainline services between Taunton and London Paddington which call at the former platforms can be operated by HSTs. Platform 3 is used only by services between Bristol Temple Meads and Weymouth - rarely operated by trains with more than four cars.

Looking south frmo the southern end of platform 1 at Castle Cary railway station in Somerset. The station is located about a mile north of the town of Castle Cary due to the rail junction seen here - the leftmost track heads to Weymouth while the main Berks and Hants line between Reading and Taunton via Westbury continues beneath the bridge visible right of centre. On the extreme right are a siding and a disused south-facing bay platform. The building visible is no longer connected to the railway.

Looking south frmo the southern end of platform 1 at Castle Cary railway station in Somerset. The station is located about a mile north of the town of Castle Cary due to the rail junction seen here - the lefthand track heads to Weymouth while the main Berks and Hants line between Reading and Taunton via Westbury continues beneath the bridge on the right.
