chc-back-jp.jpg (116240 bytes)

This is the view of Charing Cross Station as you approach it by train having just crossed over the River Thames. This very modern and stylish building is very different from the more traditional appearence that is seen if you walk into the station's main entrance. Picture taken August 2003.

chc-front-jp.jpg (130666 bytes)

This is the front of Charing Cross Station London. There cannot be many buildings that look more different from the front than they do from the back. Part of it is a hotel as well as offices. Visible directly outside the station is the Eleanor Cross from which all non-rail distances from London are measured.

Picture taken from the top deck of a bus in August 2003. On the subject of buses notice the famous London Routemaster in the picture which has served London for over 40 years.

chc-gangway-jp.jpg (63517 bytes)

South end of London-Charing Cross, seen from the overhead interchange.

One can appreciate the great diversity of the SET rolling-stock underneath: Class 465-466 "Networker", Class 376 "Metro Electrostar", Class 375 "Electrostar", last but not least, Class 421 (slam-door) EMUs...

This location is also quite scenic, as one can spot the London Eye, the London Aquarium, the Shell House and the Royal Festival Hall.

London-Charing Cross.

Now a little higher, we are looking towards Charing Cross Station with the B T Tower directly behind it and beyond that London's northern suburbs.

Although not one of London's largest stations it still manages to handle considerable volumes of daily commuter traffic. In this picture it is possible to see Nelsons Column in Trafalgar Square to the left of the station.

eye-5-jp.jpg (123658 bytes)

Charing Cross station is situated on the Strand, over looking the River Thames and a very short walk to Trafalgar Square. Opened in 1864, the present building was put up in the late 1980's to provide office accommodation and clearly fits in very well with the surrounding area. This can only really be seen from the 'air' and we have to thank the arrival of the London Eye for an opportunity to appreciate its stylish architecture.

eye-6-jp.jpg (115488 bytes)

This closer view shows how the combination of station and offices, designed by Sir Terry Farrell, can be successfully blended together to form a highly distinctive but attractive modern building. Outside the station is the Eleanor Cross from which all non-rail distances from London in the UK are measured. This is why Charing Cross is often regarded as the centre of London. EMUs in various liveries can be seen coming and going.

xrm-2089-jp.jpg (94965 bytes)

To mark the end of almost 50 years of service by what has become one of London's most famous transport icons, I am hoping that it will be possible to publish this picture of newly painted RM 2089 that is now operating as a heritage bus on part of route 15 between Trafalgar Square and the Tower of London. Pictured at Trafalgar Square, which as it happens is very close to Charing Cross Station, on the 16th November 2005.
