Sunderalnd station is shared between the Tyne and Wear Metro system and mainline services, platform 3 in the foreground is for Northbound Metro services to Newcastle, platform 4 in the distance (beyond the first signal) is for Northbound mainline services, also towards Newcaslte.<br>
The two numbered signs on the left of the track are speed restriction signs - the indicating the top speed for mainline trains is 20mph, while the lower one restricts Metro services to 15km/h.
