The head of bay-platform 8 at York station. Note the rails approaching the headwall are embossed with a zig-zag pattern as a safety measure. They causes a lot of noise and vibration, so there can be no doubt that the end of the line is approaching. It is possible they assist breaking by providing extra friction, but I don't know.
It is clear that there used to be a second platform adjacent to this one, but it was removed before the current platform numbering scheme was implemented.
